Thomas Higgins might have missed out on a Walker Cup spot at Lahinch by the narrowest of margins, but he still finished his amateur career with victory in the AIG Irish Men’s Amateur Close Championship at Portumna.

Rounds of 69+73+71+68 for a 7-under-par total of 281 saw him tie Dylan Holmes of Greystones at the top of the leaderboard and he eventually prevailed in a thrilling three hole playoff to claim the title.

“It’s just a brilliant way to cap off the amateur career. I’m absolutely thrilled and delighted to get it done,” said Higgins. Who is moving to the professional ranks.

Even better his family were there to celebrate the victory with him and his cousin was his caddy.

“It was unreal to have everyone here, most of my family are here, so it was unreal to have them see me win and have them here to celebrate as well,” said Higgins.

“It was an amazing experience.
