A brilliant opening round of 68 (-5) proved the foundation for victory as Surrey’s Fredrik Lindgren claimed the English Senior Men’s County Champion of Champions title on the Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa.

Lindgren set the pace with an outstanding start which included an eagle on the par-5 6th and five birdies that saw him take a three-shot lead into the final day.

With the chasing pack closing the gap during the second round, Lindgren showed his composure when it mattered most. Despite seeing his advantage reduced, the Surrey player responded with key shots at crucial moments and carded a 74 (+1), featuring three birdies and four bogeys, to finish on 4-under-par overall and secure a three-shot victory.

He said: “It feels very good of course. It’s been a long three days for us, we had a tough day yesterday with the wind and a bit of rain and I think I played the round of my life!

“Today was a very long day trying to hold onto that lead. I started with a three-shot lead, it was down to one and I managed to pull out some good shots when I needed to and I’m really proud of that.”

Cheshire’s Gareth Bradley held onto a share of 2nd place after rounds of 73 and 72, while Durham’s Stuart Brown charged into contention with a bogey-free 70 (-3).

Brown’s 3-under-par effort was the lowest final round of the day and lifted him into a tie with Bradley on 1-under-par.
