MARSHALL & LATHAM CROWNED CHAMPIONS

Golfer's Companion August 15, 2026 2 min read

Graham Marshall (Kirby Muxloe) was crowned champion of the 2026 English Senior Men’s Amateur Championship, after a dramatic comeback against Stefan Priest (Hallowes) at Broadstone Golf Club.

The Leicestershire golfer found himself 3-down with five to play but turned the game on its head to win it on the 18th.

Marshall, who birdied 14 and 16 with tremendous putts, and composed himself to win 17 and 18, produced a memorable comeback in a 1-up win, admitting: “It’s definitely my best golfing achievement.”

On his dramatic comeback, he explained: “I had to dig on past experiences from an event I won 24 years ago! But the memories are still fresh and I just had to believe that if I got the chance, I had to grasp it.”

Meanwhile, Richard Latham (Woodhall Spa) won the inaugural English Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship (over 65s) at Broadstone Golf Club, after beating Jon Tyror 6&5 at his home course.

Latham raced into an early lead thanks to birdies on 1 and 3, before coming close to a brilliant eagle to win the 9th.

He went on to beat the Broadstone Chairman 6&5 without losing a single hole, with Tyror even remarking: “He is certainly one of the best players I have ever played against”.

After a long week for the 68-year-old, which included seven rounds of golf, Latham said: “It feels great, I’m over the moon. The weather has been hard on golf courses and we’ve played in temperatures averaging around 30 all week, so it has been challenging.”

After playing and winning the first ever English Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship, Latham admitted: “The fact that England Golf have given people over the age of 65 the opportunity to compete for longer is fantastic because we’re all not getting any younger, and those of us who still hit lots of balls as I do, are determined to carry on playing and have something to aim for.”
